Per a aquesta il·lustració, Dalí va fer un dibuix amb ploma, tinta xinesa i guaix, que posteriorment es va reproduir en tipografia i estergit (pochoir). En el Second Manifeste du Surréalisme, Breton denuncia la hipocresia de la societat i subratlla la necessitat de rebel·lar-se contra allò establert. En el seu text, el poeta exalça l’obra de Lautréamont, Les Chants de Maldoror, que tant va inspirar els surrealistes, i reivindica la llibertat de la imaginació i del pensament afirmant: “L’home que s’intimidés erròniament per alguns enormes fracassos històrics és encara lliure de creure en la seva llibertat.
