Las alusiones figurativas del artista remiten a los grandes interrogantes metafísicos sobre el amor y la muerte evocados en el poema, dedicado “Au silence de celle qui laisse rêveur” (Al silencio del soñador). René Char escribió Artine entre septiembre y octubre de 1930 en el hotel-restaurante 3 Moulins, situado en el 8 ter, rue Saules en París. Sobre su creación, comentó: “Artine se realizó a partir de dos personajes: esta joven ahogada, Lola Abba, y la joven que yo había encontrado, tres o cuatro años antes, en el césped de un hipódromo que frecuentaba como una tierra magnética” (1). El colofón del libro indica que la imprenta Ducros et Colas de París terminó de imprimir el libro el 25 de noviembre de 1930, apenas un día después de la edición de L’Immaculée conception por la misma editorial e imprenta.
