Les al·lusions figuratives de l’artista remeten als grans interrogants metafísics sobre l’amor i la mort evocats en el poema, dedicat “Au silence de celle qui laisse rêveur” (Al silenci del somiador). René Char va escriure Artine entre setembre i octubre de 1930 a l’hotel-restaurant 3 Moulins, situat al número 8 ter de la rue Saules, a París. Sobre la seva creació, va comentar: “Artine es va realitzar a partir de dos personatges: aquesta jove ofegada, Lola Abba, i la jove que jo havia trobat, tres o quatre anys abans, a la gespa d’un hipòdrom que freqüentava com una terra magnètica” (1). El colofó del llibre indica que la impremta Ducros et Colas de París va acabar d’imprimir-lo el 25 de novembre de 1930, només un dia després de l’edició de L’Immaculée Conception per la mateixa editorial i impremta.
