Dalí va dedicar l’obra íntegrament a Gala Diakonova, que va participar activament en la seva realització durant un període de profunds canvis, tal com el mateix artista explicaria més tard a La vida secreta (1942) (1) . El llibre s’inscriu dins l’original línia editorial de les Éditions Surréalistes, un projecte col·lectiu del grup surrealista iniciat el 1925 (2) . El frontispici, realitzat en heliogravat, procedeix d’un dibuix a ploma amb tinta xinesa de l’artista. Tant aquesta estampa com els dos dibuixos reproduïts en fototípia –Grup al·legòric i La caça de papallones– estan estretament relacionats amb la pintura L’homme invisible, obra que Dalí va començar al 1929 i que va deixar inacabada. El frontispici inclou una dedicatòria manuscrita a Gala, la seva musa, gravada directament a la planxa. En lletra minúscula reprodueix versos extrets del poema El Gran Masturbador: “en els cruels ornaments d’or fals / que recobreixen les seves temples delicades i flonges / i imiten / la forma d’una corona imperial / les fines fulles d’acant bronzejat de la qual / s’allarguen / fins a les galtes rosades i imberbes / i continuen les seves fibres dures / fins a fondre-les / en l’alabastre clar del seu clatell / per a Gala Diacanova Salvador Dalí 1930” (3) . Segons documentació no verificada, el treball d’impressió del frontispici va anar a càrrec de Roger Lacourière (4), mentre que la impressió del llibre va ser realitzada per la impremta Ducros et Colas de París (5). Cadascun dels deu primers exemplars, impresos en paper Japó nacrat, inclou un dibuix original a tinta de l’artista en el marge d’una de les pàgines del llibre. Els textos teòrics –L’ase podrit, La cabra sanitària, L’amor i el poema El Gran Masturbador– van ser escrits durant l’any 1930 (6). A L’ase podrit, publicat prèviament en el primer número de Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution el juliol del mateix any, Dalí exposa la seva teoria paranoica-crítica: “Crec que s’acosta el temps en què, mitjançant un procés de pensament paranoic i actiu, serà possible (simultàniament amb l’automatisme i altres estats passius) sistematitzar la confusió i contribuir al desprestigi total del món de la realitat. Els nous simulacres que el pensament paranoic pot fer aparèixer sobtadament no només tindran el seu origen en l’inconscient, sinó que la força del poder paranoic es posarà al seu servei” (7). A més a més, el llibre inclou cinc il·lustracions addicionals: una fotografia de Gala feta per Man Ray l’any 1925, un oli del mateix Dalí de l’any 1930, Dorment cavall lleó invisibles, i tres fotografies d’edificis.
