L’artiste, qui avait alors 26 ans, l’a dédié dans son intégralité à Gala Diakonova, celle-ci ayant joué un rôle actif dans son élaboration durant une période de profonds bouleversements, comme Dalí l’expliquera plus tard dans La Vie secrète (1942) (1) . Cet ouvrage s’inscrit dans la ligne éditoriale originale des Éditions surréalistes, un projet collectif du groupe surréaliste, initié en 1925 (2). Le frontispice en héliogravure est issu d’un dessin à la plume à l’encre de Chine de l’artiste. Cette estampe et les deux dessins reproduits par phototypie — Grupo alegórico (Groupe allégorique) et La caza de mariposas (La Chasse aux papillons) — sont à rapprocher de L’Homme invisible, un tableau commencé par Dalí en 1929 et demeuré inachevé. Le frontispice présente une dédicace manuscrite à Gala, la muse de Dalí, gravée directement sur la planche. Elle reprend, en lettres minuscules, quelques vers du poème El Gran Masturbador (Le Grand Masturbateur) : « dans les cruels ornements en faux or / qui recoubrent ses tempes délicates et molles / en imitant/ la forme d'une courone imperialle / dont les fines feuilles d'acante bronzé / se prolongent /jusqu'aux joues roses et imberbes / et continuant ses fibres dures / jusqu’à se fondre / dans l'alabastre claire de sa nuque / pour Gala Diacanova Salvador Dalí 1930 (3) ». Selon une information non confirmée, le frontispice aurait été imprimé par Roger Lacourière (4) et le livre par l’imprimerie Ducros et Colas, à Paris (5). Les dix premiers exemplaires, imprimés sur Japon nacré, comportent, dans la marge de l’une des pages, un dessin original de l’artiste, exécuté à l’encre. Les textes théoriques — L’Âne pourri, La Chèvre sanitaire, L’Amour et le poème Le Grand Masturbateur — ont été écrits durant l’année 1930 6) . Dans L’Âne pourri, publié quelque temps plus tôt, en juillet de la même année, dans le premier numéro de la revue Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution, Dalí présente sa théorie paranoïaque-critique : « Je crois qu’est proche le moment où, par un processus de caractère paranoïaque et actif de la pensé, il sera possible (simultanément à l’automatisme et autres états passifs) de systématiser la confusion et de contribuer au discrédit total du monde de la réalité. Les nouveaux simulacres que la pensée paranoïaque peut subitement faire apparaître, non seulement auront leur origine dans l’inconscient, mais aussi la force du pouvoir paranoïaque sera mise au service de celui-ci (7) ». Le livre comprend cinq illustrations supplémentaires : une photo de Gala prise par Man Ray en 1925, une huile sur toile de Dalí datée de 1930 — Dormeuse, cheval, lion invisibles — et trois photos de bâtiments. Deux de ces édifices modernistes existent toujours : la Casa Lleó Morera, conçue par Lluís Domènech i Montaner et située sur le Paseo de Gracia à Barcelone, et la Casa Geli Vergés, œuvre de l’architecte Antonio Alcaide, située au numéro 58 de la rue Sant Llàtzer à Figueres. __________ (1) DALI, Salvador.
